JOBS TO BE DONE BETWEEN MEETS

Treat Supplier the day after a meet

Bring donuts, cookies, or popsicles to practice for the team on the days following each meet or on Fun Fridays. Arrive before the start of swim practice. (Will be reimbursed - bring receipts).


JOBS TO BE DONE EARLY ON MEET DAYS

Ice/Coffee/Donuts/Breakfast Purchaser

Buys 20 bags of ice from Sam’s the day of the home meet and delivers them early. For home meets, buys coffee, tacos, bagels and donuts the day of the meet and delivers them early. Coordinate with Concessions team. (Will be reimbursed - submit receipts.)

Parking Director

Arrive 1 hour early to cone off parking, setup signage, help direct drop off flow and parking. 30 min. after start of meet, you are done and you may turn in your supplies to the meet coordinator.

Volunteer Check-in

Arrive 1 hour early to check in the parent volunteers. Confirm their position and give them their supplies, if necessary. 30 minutes after start of meet, you are done and you may turn in your supplies to the volunteer coordinator.

Swimmer Check-in

Arrive 1 hour early to check in swimmers. Work together to mark swimmers off the list and to write the swimmer’s numbers on their arm and hand. Before start of meet, alert coach to missing swimmers. 30 minutes after start of meet, you are done and you may turn in your supplies to the volunteer coordinator.

Wall Posting and Heat Marker

Arrive 30 min. early to get Meet Schedule from coach. Tape Meet Schedule on wall. Mark arms of checked-in swimmers with their heats - only at their request. 30 minutes after start of meet, you are done and you may turn in your supplies to volunteer coordinator.


JOBS TO BE DONE DURING A MEET

Announcer

Announces start of meet, intermission, sponsors, and end of meet on the PA system. When not announcing, helps out where needed.

Flip Chart Turner

Works with the Starter. Manipulates the flip chart which helps timers, parents and swimmers keep up with events.

Head Timer – WHALe Required Position

Standing poolside, you will start a stopwatch with each heat, acting as a backup timer. Looking at the lane timers, if any of them have their hand raised, signaling their watch has a problem, you deliver your watch to them.

Lane Timer – WHALe Required Position

Sits at the end of a designated lane and times the swimmer with a stop watch from the moment the race is started to the touch at the finish, then records the time on a timing slip. It is a great way to see your swimmer!

Timing Slip Runner – WHALe Required Position

Collects timing slips at end each race and takes them to the console operator.

Ribbon Table Helper

Sits near the scoring table, applies printed labels to the appropriate ribbons, files ribbons for distribution to swimmers.

Kid Wrangler

Works in the canopies with other Kid Wranglers to locate swimmers, get/keep them in line for upcoming swims, and keeps them engaged and happy. Delivers kids from the canopies to the Ready Bench Helpers.

Ready Bench

Works at the benches with Ready Bench team to get/keep swimmers in their proper swim heat and lane.

Concessions

First Half helps with setup and sales, Second Half helps with sales and cleanup.

Grill Masters

This job must be claimed by Wednesday! For home meets, prepares grill around 10:30, grills hamburgers and hot dogs for concessions. Clean grill and place in closet at the end of the meet.

Water Delivery and Supplies

Periodically wheels around cooler to deliver cold water bottles to all working volunteers. Periodically takes out the trash. Periodically checks restroom for supplies.


JOBS THAT NEED CERTIFICATION

These jobs are required by the league, and without these positions filled, we cannot have a meet. Certification can be done online – it involves watching  online videos provided by the WHALe league and answering online questions. 

Console operation training is good for 1 year

Stroke and Touch/Turn Judge Training is good for 2 years

Starter/Referee Training is good for 2 years


Console Operator

Online training takes about 2 hours. Works Home and Away Meets. Requires annual console certification. BLST would like 4 trained Console Operators

Adds swimmers and revises heats prior to meet. Provides heat sheets. Sits under a canopy at a table with a scorer from the opposing team in view of the finish end of the pool. Operates the Dolphin Wireless console and the Meet Manager software to import the times from the electronic stop watches. Overrides with averages or backup manual times as needed. Scores the meet.


Starter

Works home meets. Requires Starter/Referee Training and Judge Training. Training good for 2 years. Combined training takes about 2 hours. BLST would like 3 trained Starter/Referees.

Standing poolside, the Starter calls the swimmers up, announces which heat is next, directs the swimmers to ‘take your mark’, checks with the timers and console operators that they are ready, uses a starting buzzer to start the race, signals any false starts, then clears the pool lanes after each heat.


Referee

Works home meets. Requires Starter/Referee Training and Judge Training. Training good for 2 years. Combined training takes about 2 hours. BLST would like 3 trained Starter/Referees.

Reviews procedures with the judges, timers and coaches prior to a meet. Conveys infractions noted by judges to timing sheets. Clears the pool following a race, discusses protests and questions from head coaches, works with Starter and Scoring Console to keep race on schedule. Must be familiar with rules and strokes.


Stroke and Touch/Turn Judges

Works home and away meets. Requires Judge Training. Training good for 2 years. Training takes about 1 hour. BLST would like 12 trained Judges.

Stroke Judge

Sits mid-pool and watches for the correct stroke mechanics of a swimmer during the race. Reports disqualifying strokes or kicks to the Referee.

Touch/Turn Judge

Sits at the ends of the pool and watches for the correct touch and turn by swimmers during a race. Responsible for the first stroke out on a start, the turn and the last stroke/touch at the wall. Reports disqualifying mechanics for start, touches or turns to the Referee.
