BETWEEN MEET JOBS

Treat Supplier (Day after a meet)

Bring donuts, cookies, or other treat to practice for the team on the days following each meet. Arrive before the start of swim practice. Coordinate with Concessions Coordinator for required quantities and purchase locations. (Reimbursed - keep receipts.)

EARLY MEET DAY JOBS

Ice/Coffee/Donuts/Breakfast Purchasers (Home Meets Only)

Buys bags of ice the day of the home meet and delivers them before meet start. Picks up coffee, tacos, donuts the day of the meet and delivers them before meet start. All of these items need to be purchased, so this may require a team effort. Coordinate with Concessions Coordinator for required quantities and purchase locations. (Reimbursed - keep receipts.)

Parking Director (Home Meets Only)

Arrive 1.5 hour before meet start time to place cones at drop-off area, setup parking signage, help direct drop-off flow and parking. At the start of the meet, this job is done. Collect cones and signage and place in storage closet. You may be asked to perform another job in-meet if needed.

Volunteer Check-in (Home and Away Meets)

Arrive 1.5 hour before meet start time to check in the parent volunteers. Inform Volunteer Coordinator of unfilled critical volunteer positions. Assign non-working parents to fill critical positions if needed. At the start of the meet, this job is done. You may be asked to perform an in-meet job if needed.

Swimmer Check-in (Home and Away Meets)

Arrive 1.5 hour before meet start time to check in swimmers. Marks registered swimmers off the list and to writes the swimmers' events/heats on their arms. Alert coach to no-show swimmers. At the start of the meet, this job is done. You may be asked to perform an in-meet job if needed.

IN-MEET JOBS

MEET CRITICAL JOBS

Per league rules, the meet cannot occur without filling these critical positions. We will fill them. Forfeiting or cancelling a meet due to lack of volunteers is not an acceptable option.

Head Timer – WHALe Required Position (Home Meets Only)

Starts two manual stopwatches with each heat, acting as a backup timer. Looking at the lane timers, if any of them signals that their watch has a problem, you deliver a spare watch to them.

Lane Timer – WHALe Required Position (Home and Away Meets)

Sits at the finish end of a designated lane and times the swimmers with a stop watch from the moment the race is started to the touch at the finish. Records the time on a lane timing sheet. We must have one BLST lane time per lane for both halves of the meet. 

Lane Timer Procedures

Timing Slip Runner – WHALe Required Position (HOME ONLY)

Collects lane timing sheets at the end of a few races and takes them to the Console Operators. This job can be simultaneously performed with some other volunteer jobs, if needed (e.g. Chart Flipper or Water Delivery)

Console Operator - WHALe Required Position - Training Required - (Home and Away Meets)

Requires console training (about 2 hours). BLST would like 4 trained Console Operators per season

Adds swimmers and revises heats prior to meet. Prints heat sheets. Sits under a canopy at a table with a scorer from the opposing team in view of the finish end of the pool. Operates the Dolphin Wireless console and the Meet Maestro software to import the times from the electronic stop watches. Enters times from the manual watches. Reconciles timing discrepancies per league guidance. Applies DQs from the Referee. Prints ribbon labels. Scores the meet.

Starter- WHALe Required Position - Training Required (Home Meets Only)

Requires Starter/Referee Training (about 2 hours total). BLST would like at least 3 trained Starter/Referees. Starter/Referees are also certified as Stroke/Turn Judges due to training overlap.

Standing poolside, the Starter calls the swimmers up, announces which heat is next, directs the swimmers to ‘take your mark’, checks with the timers and console operators that they are ready, uses the starter device start the race, signals any false starts, then clears the pool lanes after each heat.

Referee- WHALe Required Position - Training Required (Home Meets Only)

Requires Starter/Referee Training (about 2 hours total). BLST would like at least 3 trained Starter/Referees. Starter/Referees are also certified Stroke/Turn Judges due to training overlap.

The Referee is the Head Judge. Reviews rules and procedures with the judges, timers and coaches prior to a meet. Conveys DQ infractions noted by judges to the Referee sheets. Verifies with judges that DQs are correctly interpreted. Discusses protests and questions from head coaches, works with Starter and Scoring Console to keep race on schedule.

Stroke and Touch/Turn Judges- WHALe Required Position - Training Required (Home and Away Meets)

Requires Judge Training (about 1.5 hours). BLST would like 10 trained Judges per season (total - can include Starter/Ref trained Judges).

Stroke Judge

Sits/stands/walks mid-pool and watches for the correct stroke mechanics of swimmers during the race. Reports disqualifying strokes, kicks, or positions to the Referee.

Touch/Turn Judge

Sits at the ends of the pool and watches for the correct starts, touches, or turns by swimmers during a race. Responsible for the first stroke out on a start, the turns and the last stroke/touch at the wall. Reports disqualifying mechanics for starts, touches or turns to the Referee.

OTHER IN-MEET JOBS

Other jobs that are important to our team and successful operation of a meet, but the league will not make us forfeit if we can't fill all of them

Home Announcer/Meet Director (Home Meets Only)

Announces start of meet, intermission, sponsors, and end of meet on the PA system. Coordinates National Anthem group sing. Helps resolve issues during meet to keep things running smoothly. When not announcing, helps out in any other position as-needed. Usually filled by the President. 

Flip Chart Turner (Home Meets Only)

Works with the Starter/Console. Manipulates the flip chart which helps timers, console operators, swimmers and spectators keep up with events.

Ribbon Table (Home and Away Meets)

Sits near the scoring table during meets, applies printed labels to the appropriate ribbons, files ribbons for distribution to swimmers.

Kid Wrangler (Home and Away Meets)

Works in the canopies with other BLST Kid Wranglers to locate swimmers, get/keep them in line for upcoming swims, and keeps them engaged and happy. Delivers kids from the canopies to the Ready Bench Team.

Ready Bench (Home and Away Meets)

Works at the benches with BLST and opposing team's Ready Bench team to get/keep swimmers in their proper swim heats and lanes. 

Concessions (Home Meets Only)

First Half helps with setup and breakfast sales, Second Half helps with lunch sales and cleanup. We will cancel concessions to fill more critical positions if needed. 

Grill Masters (Home Meets Only)

For home meets, prepares grill around 10:30, grills hamburgers and hot dogs for concessions. Cleans grill and place in closet at the end of the meet. This job must be claimed early to make sure we have someone to do the job before we buy the food! We will cancel grilling to fill more critical positions if needed.

Water Delivery and Supplies (Home Meets Only)

Periodically delivers cold water bottles to all working volunteers. Periodically takes out the trash. Periodically checks restrooms for condition and supplies.
