Lane Timer Procedures
Lane Timers
The Lane Timers are responsible for recording of swimmers’ times during the meet. Each lane will have two (2) timers.
1. Each lane will have one (1) timer from each team.
2. One timer has a Dolphin Wireless Watch and a manual stopwatch.
3. One timer has a Dolphin Wireless Watch and a Lane/Timer sheet.
4. Each timer will be assigned a lane. The assigned lane is the only lane for which the timer has any responsibility.
5. The Dolphin Wireless Watch will automatically start when the Starter is activated. The manual stopwatch must be manually started at the Starter signal.
6. When the swimmer makes the wall touch at the Timer’s feet, the Dolphin and manual stopwatches will be manually stopped by the Lane Timers. All three times will be written on the lane timer sheet for every swimmer/event. The written order will be Dolphin Watch A, Dolphin Watch B, Manual Stopwatch.
7. The times will be written completely. For example, a measured time of 35.55 seconds is correct format and is not the same as writing 35 or 36 seconds. Minor time discrepancies and averages will be handled by the Console Team per league guidelines. This is important. Some races are won and lost by hundredths of a second.
8. Before starting the next event, the Dolphin Watches will be automatically reset. The manual stopwatch will be manually reset.
9. Lane timers will refrain from using their phones during timing. You may watch your own swimmer in an event to the extent that you do not mistime the swimmer in your lane.
10. In the event of manual stopwatch failure during a race, the lane timer will shout for the Head Timer to bring a replacement watch, which should be running in synch with the other watches.
11. In any unforeseen or unexpected circumstance (unexpected missing swimmer, unexpected swimmer, etc.) the lane timer can communicate with the Starter or Referee to clear the confusion before or after the race.
12. When your lane timing sheet is full, raise your hand and your Runner will collect your sheet.
Head Timers
There are two* Head Timers standing on either side of the pool, each providing primary coverage for half the pool. Each Head Timer has two stopwatches. For example, at an eight lane pool, one Head Timer is responsible for lanes 1-4 and the other is responsible for lanes 5-8. * In some meets, one Head Timer can be used (5 lane pools).
1. At the start of the race, both manual stopwatches are started at the flash of the starting system.
2. Head Timers will look towards the Lane Timers to see if any hands are raised. If a Lane Timer has a hand raised, or otherwise indicates a need for assistance, the Head Timer will deliver one of their stopwatches to the Lane Timer in exchange for the their old stopwatch.
Runners
The Runners pick up and deliver completed event timer sheets to the Console Operators regularly throughout the meet.
