A disqualification (DQ) is a Judge-observed improper start, stroke, turn, or finish mechanic during an event. In a relay or IM, it can occur during any leg of the event, and applicable individual stroke rules apply to each leg. A DQ results in a no-time for the event. DQs are common, especially for younger swimmers and more complex strokes. They are analogous to a strike-out in baseball. Just as becoming a good hitter in baseball takes practice and skill, getting the correct body mechanics to complete a race of breast stroke or butterfly will take focus, repetition, skill, and strength during practice sessions and during the meets. It is common for kids to do pretty well during practice and then get excited trying to win a race and make mistakes. If your swimmer gets a DQ during a meet, they are still doing fine and were put in the meet in that stroke because it is fun and educational to compete in a meet. The coaches observe them during practices and think that they have a reasonable chance of getting through the stroke. The team philosophy is to have as many swimmers compete in as many events as possible. This is summer league and we want everyone to swim, learn, and have fun. Perfection should not be expected.
